TRAUMA FOCUSED EQUINE ASSISTED THERAPY

Trauma-Focused Equine-Assisted Therapy (TF-EAP) partners clients with horses to help people heal from trauma and relationship challenges. TF-EAP is specifically designed to meet the needs of those who have experienced trauma in relationships, such as abuse, neglect, abandonment, sexual assault, or other adverse experiences.

TF-EAP offers the opportunity for deep connection and reparative experiences. It has has two main components Relationship Logic and Rhythmic RidingRelationship Logic takes place on the ground and may include herd observation and exploration, connecting and working with a horse in the roundpen, grooming, leading, and other activities. Rhythmic Riding takes place on the horse’s back and may include Equine Connected EMDR. Whether mounted or on the ground the connected relationship between the client and horse is the goal.  This is the most important aspect of why collaborating with horses is so valuable - the connection between horse and person can make all the difference in fostering healthy nervous system regulation and resilience.

In my practice, I am specially trained in Equine Connected EMDR, and also integrate many other trauma healing modalities to offer a comprehensive and holistic approach to healing from trauma. In These sessions are designed to help clients develop a greater sense of self-awareness, build healthy relationship skills, offer reparative attachment experiences, and process trauma to facilitate greater nervous system regulation and coping skills.

What is equine Connected emdr?

Equine Connected EMDR is an innovative approach to trauma healing and counseling that takes place while the client is riding a horse. “Processing trauma while being rocked, held, and carried by a deeply connected and attuned relationship partner is life-changing and life-giving in every way. The horse literally and figuratively walks the client through the traumatic memory in a deeply connected manner, helping the client to regulate and connect, while facilitating an integration of implicit and explicit memory” (Natural Lifemanship).

What if I have no previous horse experience?

You are absolutely welcome and encouraged to participate in equine therapy if you have no horse experience! We will go slow with a focus on safety and consent (for you and the horse!).

I had a negative experience with a horse and I’m Scared… Can I do This?

ABSOLUTELY! During our first meeting we’ll discuss your past experiences with horses. We will work to establish and access cues for safety, titrate any feelings of anxiety and fear related to connecting with horses, and address safety concerns. This modality and horse partnership can be incredibly empowering for folks who are scared of horses.
